Yesterday I spoke about [tag]fantasy draft strategies for catchers[/tag], and the studs you should consider if you choose to go in that direction early. But if you choose to wait a bit and leave Mauer, McCann and Martinez to someone else, what can you expect? There are a few options, options that I’ll call 2nd tier, of guys that aren’t quite at the top, but are surely not middle of the pack.
Kenji Johjima
[tag]Kenji Johjima[/tag] set a lot of rookie records in Seattle for catchers last season. True he’s 30 years old and wasn’t truly a rookie if you count his Japanese experience. Expect Johjima to approach the .300/.350/.500 range and hit close to 20 dingers as he gets comfortable for a full season in the heart of the Mariners lineup.
Russell Martin
[tag]Russell Martin[/tag], the young Dodger rookie, impressed in 2006 with his balanced offensive attack. You can expect Martin to approach the upper .280/.360/.450 range and improve on his 10 HR’s and 10 SB’s and he bats 6th in the Dodger lineup in ‘07.
Tomorrow I’ll go over the middle of the pack catcher options as well as some sleepers you can watch out for in 2007. Wednesday, I’ll finalize (well, at least I’ll post it) my catcher rankings.
